For the past few years I have been trying out many eyeshadow primers, some of which I love, some I hate and some I'm in between.
Here are the comparisons between the ones I currently have in my makeup kit.
Here are the comparisons between the ones I currently have in my makeup kit.
Urban Decay Original Eye Shadow Primer - £16
I had heard so many good things about Urban Decay's eyeshadow primers, so this year I bought one to try out myself for my birthday. Urban Decay have 4 different primers on the market; Original, Eden, Anti Aging and Sin.
I was advised that Original was the best for all skin types and all eyeshadow looks.
You get a great sized tub which is in a very sleek lilac and silver colour. This contains 11ml of product which is a great size.
The consistency of the product is a cream/liquid making it very easy to apply and blend on the eyelid. Its not too oily and a little of the product goes a long way.
The colour of the primer is a nude colour however dries almost transparent.
Eyeshadows appear much bolder and more vibrant when applied on top of this primer. It makes blending eyeshadows and other eye cosmetics incredibly easy to blend and apply.
I have worn eye makeup with this primer for 12+ hours and had no creasing or fading.
This primer is a high end product and is fairly expensive compared to primers you can purchase on the high-street but it is definitely worth its price tag.
Makeup Revolution Stay Don't Stray Eye Primer - £4.99
When looking into Makeup Revolution products, I stumbled across this eyeshadow primer and thought I'd try it out as its far cheaper than the brands I'd used in the past and was far more accessible as its available on the high-street.
Makeup Revolution have a couple of eye primer ranges however in this range there are 3 options; matte, wow and stay don't stray - all of which give a different finish.
The product comes in a pink and silver packaging which is very similar to Urban Decay's packaging however I do feel this one looks much cheaper than Urban Decay's. I cannot find a weight or measurement of this primer however it is slightly bigger than the Urban Decay primer so at a guess I would say you get around 13g of product.
The product again is a nude colour and a liquid/cream consistency however is very oily. Once dry, this oiliness isn't apparent but it might be best to avoid if you have oily eyelids. It is easy to blend onto the eyelid providing you use a tiny amount. This primer dries transparent.
The primer again makes eyeshadows bolder and more vibrant and makes application of eye products incredibly easy.
I have worn eye makeup for 12+ hours with this primer and have noticed no creasing or fading of any eye makeup product.
The pricing for this product is fantastic and very affordable. It is definitely a rival for higher ended brands!!
Benefit - Lemon Aid Eyeshadow Primer - £16.50
I bought a Benefit Lemon Aid primer years ago and it had recently ran out so I asked for a new one last Christmas. I received a new one and strangely enough, I don't like it as much as the last one - I'm fairly sure something has changed within its consistency.
The product comes in a little matte black compact which has a mirror inside as well as the 2.7g of product.
The colour of this primer is yellow and I understand that this is to combat any blue undertones in the eye area making it an even coloured base. The consistency is a thick, hard cream which I dislike as it is very chalky and isn't easy to blend out around the eyes without having to drag the skin. It appears paler than the skin around my eye area and I am very pale so I can imagine this would be a huge issue for darker toned users.
The product does make eyeshadows and eye products look bolder however I feel that it leaves them looking grey and powdery. It doesn't improve the ease of applying makeup and makes it harder to blend shadows because of how chalky it is on the eye.
This product will crease if a powder shadow is not applied on top almost instantly.
I have worn this primer for 12+ hours and have had no creasing or fading.
This primer is the most expensive I have purchased and has been the poorest quality (this time around).
Overall I would definitely recommend to avoid Benefit's Lemon Aid especially if you are looking for a quick easy makeup application and/or aren't very experienced with the makeup kit as it makes application more difficult.
I would highly recommend purchasing the Makeup Revolution Stay Don't Stray if you are looking to save a few pennies as its almost a perfect product . If you feel like treating yourself to something more luxurious and practically perfect in every way, definitely go for the Urban Decay Primer.
