How Not To Fall In Love, Actually - Catherine Bennetto - Review

After finishing a Jodi Picoult book, I decided I needed to let my brain settle with a light hearted, easy reading chick lit (those who read Jodi Picoult will understand my need for a short break between books).

Not going to lie, when it comes to buying books, I do buy them partly for their covers and it's clear to see why this one stood out to me!!

I purchased my copy of How Not To Fall In Love, Actually by Catherine Bennetto via Amazon and it cost me just £2.99 instead of the £7.99 RRP (God I love Amazon!!).

I found very quickly that although there aren't a huge amount of characters in the book, I was struggling to differentiate between a few of them. I'm putting this down to the book moving far too quickly; I like to be told both physical and personality details about each character to help me play out the book in my head.

There are 45 chapters in this 497 page book!! Although I love a book with quick chapters which I can read during my lunch break or the 15 minutes I have to wind down before bed, this was too short and possibly the reason the book moved too quickly. I very quickly couldn't remember what I had read in the previous chapter because each one seemed to start off as a different day. When you have around 5-6 pages to write or read about a day, lots of vital information is missed out.

Within the first 10 chapters, everything that could go wrong in a 25 year olds life seems to happen to this one character. As much as fictional characters 'dramas' entertain me, this was too much and way too far fetched. I want a book to be realistic and relatable; this book was neither.

The storyline throughout the whole book is fairly mundane, uninteresting and completely predictable.

There are chapters full of 'nothingness' and then chapters where a lot seemed to happen to the main characters in a small amount of time.

Not to spoil the ending for anybody, but everything does work out in some shape or form. Again I found this predictable and totally unrealistic.

I'm all for writing books that are far out there and completely bonkers, but with this book I was hoping for a connection and for a sense of relatability with me as the main character is my age and started off as supposedly a book about 'real life as a 25 year old'.

I always finish a book once I've started. This particular book seemed to last me a lifetime. I doubt ill be picking it up again to reread in the future.

Over all I found this book to be too much of a wishy washy chick lit for me personally. I doubt I'll be buying another of Bennetto's books after this, but for £2.99 it gave me a little enjoyment to pass time.
